Is that your office? Remodeling offices and buildings.

How many people go into an office and think about the décor or the building itself the office is in?  The answer is everyone, don’t tell me you haven’t done it.  Everyone looks at everything and most judge it, why wouldn’t your office be any different.  We deal with a lot of networking partners and we meet them at offices that most people would consider out of date.  If your office hasn’t been built or remodeled since 2000 or earlier then you most likely need an update.  If you overhear someone’s conversation talking about their insurance agents old office, Is that your office?  Then you might consider an update.

Think new and improved, look at your computer, how old is it?  Most office computers are upgraded every 3 years or sooner.  Why should your office been any different.  People tend to congregate towards newer and more modern looking offices than outdated and antiquated office spaces.  Not only offices, but also the commercial buildings that house them as well.  The whole commercial building the office is in, is a focal point for someone to judge.  Business owners need to evaluate the current revenue versus the different revenue one could achieve through remodeling.

We know most people prefer a newer building to do business in and they prefer a more modern looking office.  The office updates could only need new paint, removing wallpaper or paneling.  Some might need a new front counter, new lighting, and new flooring.  Some may need a complete overhaul.  Each space is unique and most clients have different budgets.  The clients should base their needs and goals with their budgets.  So a desired result is achieved through the commercial remodeling project.

The building or shopping center the leased spaces are in, is also a big deal.  A lot of shopping centers and office buildings do a face remodel as like to call it.   They remove the current front of the shopping center and build a new one.  Giving it a more modern look for their tenants.  Usually the renovation consists of metal building components being installed for the substructure.  Then metal or wood framing is added and then the finish materials can be installed.  Stucco, brick, and various exterior finishes are applied.  Aluminum storefronts are also popular with maybe some new landscaping or signage.

Aging in Place: Home Remodel Ideas

In 2030 the number of people aged over 65 will soar to about 72.1 million, or 1 in 5 Americans.

A survey conducted in November 2012 by AARP of 1,616 adults ages 45 and older found that fewer than half of the respondents have a half-bath on the main level of their home, an entrance without steps, door handles that are levers instead of knobs, or doorways that are wider than standard.

Now think about your home or your parent’s home…is there an entrance to the home without steps? Probably not. Are all the door handles in the house knobs instead of levers? Most likely. How about the hardware on the kitchen cabinets; go take a look at them. Are they small handles and knobs?

These are pictures of beautiful kitchens but one thing is similar: the hardware on the cabinets could become a problem to someone aging in their own home who can no longer have a tight grip on simple things like a cabinet knob. Or there isn’t any hardware on the cabinets at all.

Below are some of the type of hardware that should be installed instead.

There are other things to consider when keeping a parent or elder adult in their own home to age:

-Raising the height of the dishwasher to reduce strain of loading and unloading

-Installing a shallow sink, hands free faucet that is mounted on the side and incorporate an anti-scald device to prevent burns

-Along with different hardware for cabinets, adding pull out shelves for the lower cabinets and pull down shelves for upper cabinets

-Making sure that there is a bathroom on the main level

-Moving the laundry room to the main level and making sure there is plenty of space to navigate

-Replacing washer and dryer with front loader appliances with large buttons or push knobs

-The different flooring throughout the house should be a non-slip surface; remove rugs because of the trip hazards

When you are ready to make some changes to your home or someone else’s home to make it more aging in place friendly, contact us at Friga Construction.  Sometimes the littlest, simplest changes can make all the difference in the world.

What the Heck is a Composite Deck??

Composite Decks

Composite decking is an environmentally friendly lumber alternative that combines plastic and wood fiber. Most are made from recycled wood scraps and plastic– making them eco-friendly. They come in a variety of earth-tones and wood colors. Composite decks come in a plank form, similar to traditional wood planks.

“Trex claims that much of its plastic comes from 1.5 billion plastic shopping bags, or about 7 out of every 10 in the US. They also don’t use any virgin wood, using mill waste and old pallets instead.”

Go for the composite deck if you don’t mind spending a bit more money for a deck that requires far less maintenance and is eco-friendly. A good scrub in the spring will help keep it clean and free of mold. No more dangerous chemicals that can harm the environment! Hooray for Mother Earth!

Below are pictures of a composite deck that Friga Construction recently finished. When you are ready to spend less time maintaining your outside deck and more time enjoying it, give Friga Construction a call.

Pros:

  • Weather resistant
  • Durable
  • Long lasting
  • Stain resistant
  • Lightweight
  • Won’t splinter or rot
  • Low maintenance
  • Most use recycled materials

Cons:

  • Some look fake
  • Some brands can be slippery
  • More expensive than lumber
  • Not resistant to mold and mildew, especially in shade
  • Eventually shows signs of age and decay
  • Tend to sag and bend more than wood

Room Under the Stairs: Home Office Ideas

Isn’t it lovely when you need to bring work home or when you need to get some things done on the internet and don’t have the room around the house to do it?

I mean, there is always the dining room table but there is already mail and laundry piled there. You could always sit on the couch…but then your laptop gets so hot on your leg, you’re afraid either might catch fire before you’re finished. So, if you don’t have an extra room to create a home office, cannot afford to create an extra room for just a home office, and are seeking the extra space, what do you do… here’s an idea: Are you ready?

What about that empty space under the stairs? The under stairs space usually is left empty and doesn’t serve anything, (unless you took in your nephew and now serves as his bedroom; haha…that was a joke for the HP fans out there!) but now you can transform that negative space into a useful and functional under stairs home office.

The space does not have the dreaded corner where you file bills or finish that report for the boss. Let it be for the whole family! Contact us at Friga Construction when you decide that the space under the stairs is indeed just ‘space’ and something needs to be done. We can do these small projects. We can make it appear the new room under the stairs had been there since the beginning. Take a look at the pictures below and give us a call when you are ready. We want to make your visions become reality, and they will with Friga Construction.

Can You Start A Home Remodel In The Winter??

Since there are not a lot of people remodeling during the winter, it’s the slow season for contractors. Furthermore, when contractors have less to do, they have more time to work on your project, so your remodeling may get done quicker as well. During winter you may find that contractors may have more time to work with you in planning and designing your project. This would be a good time for refining the details before the actual work begins. Give Friga Construction a call and we can help make your visions become reality.

Many homeowners will wait until spring to remodel because they are concerned about dust, fumes, ventilation and areas for staging the work. Current technologies and clean up methods do effectively control these problems. Fans with negative air pressure, plastic zip doors, and sealing off heat ducts with a filter will contain dust, debris and fumes to the work area.

It is usually easier for contractors to schedule work in winter months because there is a lot less exterior work being done. This will free up a contractor’s schedule for kitchen, bathroom and basement remodeling  a shorter wait for work to begin. Contact Friga Construction today and we will set up a free consultation to check out what you want remodeled. We think outside of the box and can offer many ideas, as well as paying close attention to minor details. We look forward to hearing from you and making your visions become reality.
